This afghan (click here to see a much larger version) was featured on the
cover of the best-selling crochet book: "Illustrated Patchwork Crochet", by
Bella Scharf. It has also appeared over the years in numerous magazines, and is a
crocheted adaptation of a very popular fabric quilting pattern, also called
"Grandmother's Flower Garden". |

Yarn - Crochet Hook - Measurements
| Recommended
yarn for this project is 4-ply "worsted-weight" yarn, either in 100% wool or
acrylic. Crochet hook to be used is a size "H" or "I". Be sure to
maintain the stitch gauge given for the afghan, so your work will be the correct size. If
the motif does not measure the suggested size (as shown in the drawing), try different
size hooks until the motif is the correct size. |

HOW TO
DO A TRIPLE CROCHET STITCH |
To practice, begin with a
chain of 15 stitches. Yarn over hook twice (Figure 1). Insert hook into the fifth chain
from hook, yarn over, and pull a loop through the chain, *yarn over and pull yarn through
two loops on hook; repeat from * 2 more times to complete the stitch (Figure 2). To finish
practicing, work a triple crochet stitch in the next chain and every chain across. |
ROUND ONE:Chain 6,
slip stitch into the first chain to form a ring; chain 6, * do a triple crochet into the
ring, then chain 2. Repeat from the asterisk (*) 10 more times. Slip stitch into the
fourth chain of the original chain-6 to connect. It should now look like the illustration
on the right, with 12 "spokes" coming out of the center of the motif, and a
space in between every two "spokes" (altogether 12 spaces). |
ROUND TWO:
Slip stitch into the next chain-2 space, (chain 3, double crochet, chain 2, 2 double
crochet) into the same space; 3 double crochet into the next space. *(2 double crochet,
chain 2, 2 double crochet) into next space, 3 double crochet into next space (See the
illustration on the left). Repeat from the asterisk (*) 4 more times. Slip stitch into the
third chain of the chain-3 made at beginning of the round. Fasten off, leaving about
4" thread. Using a tapestry needle, weave the loose end into the back of the motif
and trim. |
To complete the afghan, sew
the motifs together into the hexagon pattern shown in the LAYOUT, following the letters on
the layout chart for color arrangement. Edges of the afghan can be left jagged "as
is" - no fringe is needed. |
